I've been hustling every day in my life since I was 14. Time and hustle and failure and and getting kicked in the teeth. I know for fact the both of you have looked in the mirror at one point or multiple times. I don't think I can make this. I don't know if this one's going to work out. I over leveraged myself. What if it doesn't happen? I put all my money in this thing. This deal went sideways. Interstates went up. The economy shifted. Like you need all of that to season a man or a woman that can actually handle that level of success. You have to pay your success tax. It's as simple as that. There's no fast pack. I wanted to buy a plane 20 years ago. But I put my head down. I couldn't. It wasn't time. If you're just kind of dabbling and you want the success, let me just say it right to point. It will never find you ever. Success will not come looking for you. You got to keep persisting until you succeed. Panksepp identifies seven core emotional systems — SEEKING, RAGE, FEAR, LUST, CARE, PANIC/GRIEF, and PLAY — each with distinct neural circuits, neurochemistry, and evolutionary functions. The book revolutionized affective science by demonstrating that animals have Subject emotional experiences, not just behavioral responses, and that human emotions are built on these ancient mammalian foundations. ## Key Claims - **The seven primary-process emotional systems:** SEEKING (the dopaminergic drive for exploration and reward), RAGE (anger at frustration of expectation), FEAR (threat response), LUST (sexual drive), CARE (maternal nurturance), PANIC/GRIEF (separation distress), and PLAY (social joy and rough-and-tumble bonding) — each is a distinct brain system, not a cognitive interpretation. - **Emotions are subcortical, not cortical:** The primary emotional systems operate in deep brain structures (periaqueductal gray, hypothalamus, basal ganglia) shared across mammals; cortical emotion is secondary, built on these foundations — you cannot reason your way out of a primary emotional system. - **The SEEKING system as the engine of motivation:** The dopaminergic SEEKING system is not pleasure but anticipation, exploration, and the drive toward — it is the neurobiological substrate of what Peterson calls the "hero's journey" and what the wealth-building thesis calls agency. - **Emotional systems as the foundation of social behavior:** CARE and PLAY systems are the neurobiological basis of social bonding; their disruption produces the social pathologies (isolation, aggression, failure of empathy) that characterize communities in crisis. - **The implications for psychiatric treatment:** Psychiatric medications that target subcortical emotional systems are more effective than purely cognitive approaches for deep affective disorders — meaning that cultural and economic dysfunction rooted in emotional systems cannot be addressed by argument alone. ## Notable Quotes > "The SEEKING system is the neurobiological engine of exploration, anticipation, and the drive toward." > "Emotions are not cognitive interpretations but deep neurobiological systems shared across mammalian species." > "You cannot reason your way out of a primary emotional system." > "The CARE and PLAY systems are the neurobiological basis of social bonding; their disruption produces social pathology." --- ## Topics & Tags **Stance:** reinforces --- ## Relevance to thesis Affective Neuroscience provides the neurobiological foundation for the [[Concept - Personal Agency]] framework — the SEEKING system is the neurobiological substrate of agency, and its activation or suppression shapes whether individuals can pursue long-term goals including wealth-building. The CARE and PLAY systems speak to [[Concept - Lost Maintainers]] — when the social structures that activate nurturing and bonding systems are disrupted, the resulting emotional deprivation produces behavioral pathology that no amount of economic policy can fix. The insight that emotions are subcortical and not fully controllable by cognition informs [[Concept - Attitude Gap]] — attitudes are not just beliefs but are rooted in emotional systems that shape perception and behavior below conscious awareness. ## Connections ### Related Concepts - [[Concept - Personal Agency]] — the SEEKING system is the neurobiological engine of agency - [[Concept - Attitude Gap]] — attitudes are rooted in subcortical emotional systems, not just conscious beliefs - [[Concept - Lost Maintainers]] — the disruption of CARE and PLAY systems produces social pathology - [[Concept - Inherited Financial Code]] — emotional systems are the biological substrate that inherited code shapes and channels - [[Caribbean Wealth Attitudes - Four Forces Theory]] — the thesis must account for the neurobiological foundations of economic behavior ### Related Sources - **[COMPLEMENTS]** [[Peterson - Maps of Meaning The Architecture of Belief]] — Peterson's framework is grounded in Panksepp's affective neuroscience; the he

Well, who do you borrow money from? Well, from, you know, depositors, Brian. If you've got a dollar, I borrow your dollar, and I give you, you know, these are bank balance. One dollar. One dollar. Right. Okay, and you pay interest to me on that. I do, but I also charge your fees. Well, why do you charge me fees? Because, Brian, I'm looking after your money. Your money is secure with me. I'm a bank. I mean, this is a very important amount of money. This is probably your nest egg. It's safe with us. And how much interest do you pay me? Approximately the same as I'm charging you in fees. Oh, good deal for me. Well, your money's secure with us, Brian, and I then lend that money to businesses. And those businesses generate income. This is how we build the economy. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And they put that income into the bank. I do, of course, Brian. And that builds the savings pool, and we can invest more money. Well, who do you lend that to? Well, the people they need. Credit, Brian. You see, money creates more money. So if we can create money that creates more money, we're broadening the economy. We're expanding it all the time. But shouldn't people just buy this kind of thought? You don't need to afford the things you're buying, Brian. You need to afford the interest on the money you need to borrow in order to buy them. Do people need to be buying these things that they can afford? Obviously, they think so, Brian. I mean, these things are advertised to people as very necessary, very important, and deeply, deeply attractive. Well, who's advertising things that people don't need? The company's well lending the money to. ## Caption / Post Text "Wealth is not a stagnant dry thing. Wealth is money alive. Wealth is money vibrant. Wealth is money in motion. Wealth is money continuously growing into greater and greater abundance, producing more and more of itself. Wealth is about money flowing with ease and grace and definiteness." Never forget that the bank uses your money to make them money. And the depositors capital, is the cheapest form of capital for a bank. Why? Because they pay pennies in interest. ## Key Claims - Well, I'm a bank, Brian, and I borrow money, and I lend it out, and I charge more than the people I'm lending it to than I pay to the people from whom I'm borrowing it. - Well, who do you borrow money from? This amazing looking board is an interesting take on the classic game. It has some slightly different rules and some slightly different pieces but it broadly follows the regular game. The first question you've probably got is how the pieces are going to stay on here and they're all magnetic so you set them up in a very similar way as you would with a normal chess board. All the pieces go in the same positions but there is a slightly different piece for the night so they come as a double piece and the nights join together via magnets and once in play these can be used either together or you can actually separate them out and they can play independently. The other slight difference with the setup is we've got two rows of pawns. So you have one row either side of the king line to set the whites up you just spin the board around to set up in exactly the same way. The pawns have to move away from the king line and they can't cross the other king line either so essentially you're playing those on half the board each. The rest of the pieces can move in either direction so they can cover the full board. It does take a little bit of getting used to and aside from being a fun variation of the game this board just looks so cool. It's made by Thurbanilanean creations. I believe this is the Wulma edition and they've been making them for around about 20 years since the first prototype was made in their garage. I think they came up with the rules as well for this game. Really cool, very unique and I absolutely love it. ## Caption / Post Text Is this the future of chess?!! #chess #chessboard #games #woodwork ## Key Claims - Let me introduce to you 3D chess. - This amazing looking board is an interesting take on the classic game. - It has some slightly different rules and some slightly different pieces but it broadly follows the regular game. - The first question you've probably got is how the pieces are going to stay on here and they're all magnetic so you set them up in a very similar way as you would with a normal chess board. - All the pieces go in the same positions but there is a slightly different piece for the night so they come as a double piece and the nights join together via magnets and once in play these can be used either together or you can actually separate them out and they can play independently. ## Topic Application - **other**: General ## Caveats ## Related Sources (Idea-to-Idea) - **[COMPLEMENTS]** [[Wealth - want make money]] — Both treat marketing and leverage as key drivers of scale. - **[CONTEXTUALIZES]** [[Striking distance keywords - how to rank high for them]] — Both are about using systems and execution to get discovered or ranked. ## Linkages

I remember you went on say, what punishments have God or not gifts? Do you really believe that? Yes. That's a gift to exist. That's a gift to exist. And with existence, God is suffering. There's no escape in that. But if you are grateful for your life, which I think is a positive thing to do, not everybody is. And I'm not always the most positive thing to do, then you have to be grateful for all of it. You can't choose what you're grateful for. So what do you get from loss? You get awareness of other people's loss. Well, that's true. And what it allows you to connect with that other person, which allows you to love more deeply and to understand what it's like to be a human being, and to connect with them, and to love them in a deep way that not only accepts that all of us suffer, but also then makes you grateful for the fact that you have suffered, so that you can know that about other people. It's about the fullness of your humanity. What's the point of being human? If you can't be the most human, you can be. I'm not saying best, because you're gonna be a bad person and a most human. I wanna be the most human I can be. And that involves acknowledging and ultimately being grateful for the things that I wish didn't happen, because they gave me a gift. ## Caption / Post Text Life can be so brutal. This reflects Munger's famous inversion mental model — approaching problems by thinking about what to avoid rather than what to do. The post also references previous visualizations of Munger's wisdom. The account creates minimalist illustrations of philosophical and mindset quotes. ## On-Screen Text (Vision Capture) **Carousel Image Overlay:** - (Left side): Many hard problems are best solved when... - (Right side): they are addressed backwards - Charlie Munger ••• @golimitlesss **Post Stats:** 15.5K likes, 21 comments, posted November 28, 2023 **Related Posts Visible (from More Posts grid):** - "Work is a subset of life, not superset." - "i am ___ — The two most important words in the world are I am - because whatever you say after those two words will determine your future." - "You must cross the river by feeling the stones. Honey, you can't see yourself. Can I show you who you are to me? That's why I married you in the first place because I didn't only think you were handsome and knew you are always going somewhere. That's what pushing is. Why? I didn't say push, I said you did useless man. You can watch your mates are doing. That's not pushing. That's beating. Pushing, where's the gentle graph? But it's affirmation from somebody who knows him better than anybody else. And when the woman who's often tempted to be annoying to him becomes so edifying to him, you're pushing him whilst God is pulling him. And guess who he's got his hand on? He's got his hand on you. So whilst you're pushing him, he's pulling you, you go together. And what he learns, he uses it to develop you. What you learn, you use it to develop him. Two are better than one. You can't try a long distance relationship. You have to be ready to commit and put in some extra work. Communication has to be your top most priority. And even if there's nothing to talk about, just enjoy the silence. You have the power to make each other smile from far away. Something that people living closer can't even do. The relationship is much more than holding hands and getting physical. You don't have to rush things. If you're not ready, go with the flow and love that. Get addicted to their voice and vice versa. You face both the struggles and hard feelings together in life. The willingness to be with each other in spite of the distance and the loyalty that you have for each other is unmatched. Thompson: "A man who procrastinates in his choosing will inevitably have his choice made for him by circumstance." The quote speaks to the danger of indecision — that failing to actively make choices means circumstances will decide for you, often with worse outcomes. The post is a simple text-based image with the quote and attribution. ## Corrected Transcript / Extracted Text N/A — image-based quote post, no audio/transcript. ## Caption / Post Text "A man who procrastinates in his choosing will inevitably have his choice made for him by circumstance." | Hunter S. Thompson ## Key Claims - **The cost of indecision**: Procrastinating on choices doesn't eliminate choices — it outsources them to circumstance - **Passive vs. active agency**: Failing to choose is itself a choice, one that surrenders control to external forces - **Circumstance as default decision-maker**: When you don't decide, life decides for you, and rarely in your favor - **Urgency of action**: Thompson's gonzo ethos — act deliberately or be acted upon ## Topic Application - **philosophy**: A philosophical reflection on free will, agency, and the consequences of inaction, rooted in Thompson's existentialist worldview - **mindset/psychology**: Addresses decision-making psychology, procrastination, and the mental shift from passive to active agency ## Caveats - Quote attribution to Hunter S. They've gone into defense mode. That can't work. You can't live in a marriage in a defensive position. The only way to live in a marriage is in a giving position. You're there to give to make the other person's life better. As soon as you start protecting your own pride or your own rights or your own freedom, you're not in the marriage anymore. You have stepped out and it's not going to be good. Not going to be pretty. Marriage is not for self-improvement. You get 20 years to work on self-improvement. The best years of your life. Then you got to make someone else's life better. That's marriage. So get back to being married. Stop defending yourself. It's not about you. ## Caption / Post Text How to bring peace to an emotionally volatile marriage. ## Key Claims - If a marriage is emotionally volatile, it means that both parties are looking out for themselves. - They've gone into defense mode. - You can't live in a marriage in a defensive position. - The only way to live in a marriage is in a giving position. - You're there to give to make the other person's life better. ## Topic Application - **mindset**: Mindset/psychology - **practical**: Practical skills ## Caveats ## Related Sources (Idea-to-Idea) - **[COMPLEMENTS]** [[May these reminders help us all reflect on the kind of relationship we want]] — dfdqvcnspsq says marriage must be a giving position, not defensive; dflv_gfp7c- advises finding a partner who is a giver from genuine goodness. Both argue that generous giving — not self-protection — is the foundation of a healthy marriage. - **[COMPLEMENTS]** [[Relationships - think confuse marrying coming days]] — dfdqvcnspsq says marriage is about making someone else's life better, not self-improvement; dfvbpixuzn4 says "becoming one flesh" is a lifetime journey of healing your spouse's wounds. Both frame marriage as selfless, ongoing work on behalf of the other person. - **[TENSION]** [[A lot of men are going through the same relationship issues with their woman]] — dfdqvcnspsq argues that defending your own pride and rights means you've stepped out of the marriage; diyth2lpihs is a man who has gone into exactly that defense mode, insisting he won't change from who he's always been. The reels represent opposing positions on whether self-acceptance or selfless giving should define marriage. ## Linkages - [[Concept - Personal Agency]] — marriage requires active contribution and a giving position, not defensive self-protection

Loury **Processed:** 2026-06-19T00:00:00+00:00 **Priority Bucket:** caribbean-values-wealth Source type: Book (2005, co-edited with Tariq Modood and Steven Teles) Author: Glenn C. Loury (co-editor and contributor) Publisher: Oxford University Press --- ## Summary A multi-disciplinary edited volume comparing how ethnic and racial groups achieve (or fail to achieve) social mobility across different national contexts — the US, UK, and Europe. The volume examines the role of public policy, group-level social capital, cultural practices, and discrimination in shaping differential group outcomes. Loury's contributions extend his social capital and stigma framework to comparative ethnic analysis. --- ## Key Claims - **Comparative ethnic mobility:** Different ethnic/racial groups experience different mobility trajectories even within the same national context, suggesting that group-specific factors (social capital, cultural orientation, network access) matter beyond individual-level variables. - **Policy context matters but is not determinative:** Public policy shapes the opportunity structure, but group-level institutional capacity mediates how groups access opportunities. The same policy can produce different outcomes for different groups. - **Social capital as transmission mechanism:** Ethnic communities' internal networks — mentoring, information sharing, mutual aid, credit provision — function as engines of mobility or traps of disadvantage depending on their structure and resources. - **The limits of universalist policy:** Color-blind or ethnically neutral policies may reproduce group inequality if they ignore the different starting positions and network structures of ethnic groups. --- ## Relevance to thesis The comparative ethnic mobility framework is directly applicable to the Caribbean context: Caribbean diaspora communities in different national settings (US, UK, Canada) experience different mobility trajectories shaped by both the receiving country's institutions and the community's internal social capital. The question of how group-level institutions like sou-sou and ROSCAs function as social capital engines for mobility is central to this volume's concerns and to the Caribbean Wealth thesis. --- ## Notable Quotes > "Different ethnic groups experience different mobility trajectories even within the same national context, suggesting that group-specific factors matter beyond individual-level variables." > "The same policy can produce different outcomes for different groups because group-level institutional capacity mediates how groups access opportunities." > "Ethnic communities' internal networks — mentoring, information sharing, mutual aid, credit provision — function as engines of mobility or traps of disadvantage depending on their structure and resources." > "Color-blind or ethnically neutral policies may reproduce group inequality if they ignore the different starting positions and network structures of ethnic groups." --- ## Topics & Tags **Stance:** provokes --- ## Connections ### Related Sources - **[COMPLEMENTS]** [[Loury - The Anatomy of Racial Inequality]] — Extends the stigma framework to comparative ethnic analysis across national contexts. - **[COMPLEMENTS]** [[Hossein - Building Economic Solidarity Caribbean ROSCAs]] — Both examine group-level institutions as engines of economic advancement; the edited volume provides the theoretical frame, Hossein provides the Caribbean case. ### Related Concepts - [[Concept - Lost Maintainers]] — The comparative angle reveals which groups maintain transgenerational institutions and which lose them. - [[Concept - Meeting Turn Sou-Sou and ROSCAs]] — ROSCAs as a group-level social capital institution that mediates mobility. - [[Concept - Ownership Gap and Capital Markets]] — Differential group access to capital markets as a driver of mobility differences. - [[Concept - Inherited Financial Code]] — Group-specific cultural practices as a form of inherited financial code. ### Appears In - [[Caribbean Wealth Attitudes - Four Forces Theory]] --- ## Extraction Metadata | Field | Value | |-------|-------| | Extraction Method | web research into Obsidian source note | | Confidence | high | | Duration | N/A (book) | | Transcript Length | N/A | | Fallbacks Used | 0 | --- ## Notes - Bi

Instead of addressing issues head-on, they might dwell on negativity, assume the worst, or let fear hold them back. In some cases, bad habits, toxic relationships, or self-sabotaging behaviors keep them stuck in cycles of stress and frustration 🔄. Without realizing it, they may be the biggest obstacle in their own way. However, recognizing this pattern is the first step toward change 🌱. Taking accountability, shifting perspectives, and making intentional choices can break the cycle and lead to better outcomes. It’s easy to blame outside factors, but growth comes from self-awareness and learning how to navigate challenges differently. By focusing on solutions instead of problems, people can free themselves from unnecessary struggles and build a more peaceful, fulfilling life. 💡✨ ## Key Claims - Follow (us) @PICKUPLINES for more 😂💜 (Via: @couple4infiny) Sometimes, people create their own problems by overthinking, making impulsive decisions, or refusing to take responsibility for their actions 🤯. - Instead of addressing issues head-on, they might dwell on negativity, assume the worst, or let fear hold them back. - In some cases, bad habits, toxic relationships, or self-sabotaging behaviors keep them stuck in cycles of stress and frustration 🔄. - Without realizing it, they may be the biggest obstacle in their own way. - However, recognizing this pattern is the first step toward change 🌱. ## Topic Application - **philosophy**: Philosophy - **mindset**: Mindset/psychology - **practical**: Practical skills ## Caveats ## Related Sources (Idea-to-Idea) - **[EXTENDS]** [[Relationships - higher standards lower blood pressure]] — self-sabotage is the opposite of maintaining high standards; recognizing patterns (the first step described here) enables the "catch and release" practice in defsgy5trl1 - **[COMPLEMENTS]** [[So youve decided to commit to a habit, a goal, a journey of growth]] — both address overcoming self-imposed obstacles: recognize patterns here, then adapt rather than force in dhddr3jtdtc's Wu Wei approach - **[EXTENDS]** [[Relationships - couple years ago Chris made decision gonna stop]] — self-sabotage often comes from resisting others' changes; Mel Robbins explains why — change confronts people, triggering defensive self-sabotaging reactions - **[EXTENDS]** [[facebook-1739592627474931]] — Reciprocal: the Facebook clip extends this self-sabotage note by explaining why people recreate stress cycles: familiar pain can feel safer than unfamiliar peace. ## Linkages - [[Concept - Personal Agency]] — personal agency and philosophy - [[Concept - Personal Agency]] — personal agency, taking control - [[Master Synthesis - All Reviewed Folders]] — master synthesis

This is the routine that I make for myself at home when I'm bored. I used to sell a routine for years. So I'm not new to this, I'm true to this. It identifies cultural and generational beliefs that block Caribbean financial empowerment: (1) money is "hard to get," (2) tying self-worth to giving, (3) fearing success and judgment, (4) avoiding money talks due to shame, (5) settling for less due to guilt. The message encourages rewriting these inherited beliefs to step into financial power. ## On-Screen Text (Vision Capture) **Cover slide:** - 5 Reasons Caribbean People Don't Have Enough Money **Slide 1:** - 1. You believe that money is "hard to get." - You most likely grew up hearing that financial success is reserved for the "lucky" few... maybe it was tied to a certain skin colour or family name. This belief is rooted in generations of limited opportunities, where financial struggle was a norm. - But the truth is that you have more opportunities now than ever before. The challenge is that your current belief keeps you focused on surviving, not thriving. **Slide 2:** - 2. You tie your worth to what you can give. - In our culture, we often believe that love and respect come with giving money. This belief can lead to overspending to earn affection or prove our value. - But your worth is not defined by what you give. It's time to realize that you are worthy simply because you exist...money doesn't change that. **Slide 3:** - 3. You fear success and what it means for others. - Success in money can feel uncomfortable. Growing up, you might have seen successful people labelled as greedy or selfish. This can create a subconscious fear of "outshining" others. - But fear of judgment will only hold you back from stepping into the abundance you deserve. **Slide 4:** - 4. You avoid money talks out of fear or shame. - Many of us grew up with money being a taboo topic - either no one spoke about it, or it was spoken of with shame. This silence keeps us from learning how to manage money or build wealth. - Breaking that silence and starting healthy conversations is key to changing your financial future. **Slide 5:** - 5. You settle for less because of guilt. - In our culture, being "too successful" can sometimes be seen as selfish or boastful. This guilt keeps you from fully embracing opportunities that could bring you financial freedom. - It's time to realize that being wealthy doesn't take away from others' success. In fact, your growth can inspire others to do the same. **Caption text:** - The truth is, you've been carrying beliefs that don't serve you. From the idea that money is "hard to get" to fearing success or settling for less, these patterns are rooted in generations of cultural and financial trauma. - But here's the thing: YOU have more opportunities now than ever before. It's time to challenge those beliefs and create a new, empowering relationship with money. - If you're ready to break free from the cycle and step into your financial power, it starts with rewriting your beliefs. - Hashtags: #RewriteYourStory #MoneyMindset #CaribbeanSuccess #CaribbeanPeople #ScarcityMindset **Engagement:** 22 comments, posted May 14, 2025 ## Corrected Transcript / Extracted Text *(Audio download failed - caption only)* ## Caption / Post Text The truth is, you’ve been carrying beliefs that don’t serve you.

The framework blends networking, skill acquisition, wealth-building, and relationship strategy. ## Key Claims - Build a strong network — social skills (listening, questioning, turn-taking) are foundational - Gain diverse experiences: travel, mentorship, leaving your hometown - Skills are the new way of making money — develop and monetize skills via social media - Don't rely on a single income source — build skills, audiences, and sell - Invest widely: multiple businesses, knowledge (books), and passive income assets - Long-term investments drive great returns - Marriage partner is your biggest financial, physical, and emotional decision - Marry a team player, not a "soulmate" who makes you suffer - 100 minutes/day as a recurring time commitment for self-improvement ## Topic Application - **wealth**: Multiple income streams, business creation, passive investing, asset acquisition - **mindset**: Self-improvement framework, long-term thinking, deliberate life design - **practical**: Actionable advice — specific habits (100 min/day), milestones (5+ countries by 30), skill-building ## Caveats - Generic motivational content; advice is broad and not evidence-based - "Open 5+ businesses" is unrealistic for most people - "Marry a team player not a soulmate" is a provocative framing that oversimplifies relationship dynamics - Content is aggregated/reposted from multiple accounts ## Related Sources (Idea-to-Idea) - **[COMPLEMENTS]** [[Habits and Skills]] — cjobzlydwcp says build skills and connections from 18-35; cxrcl5woz0a says focus your 20s on skills and habits so opportunities appear in your 30s. Both prescribe the same life-stage investment strategy. - **[EXTENDS]** [[Wealth - want number strategy top families world]] — cjobzlydwcp says marry a team player, not a soulmate who makes you suffer; c8gdlgdvdug says
