Loury **Processed:** 2026-06-19T00:00:00+00:00 **Priority Bucket:** caribbean-values-wealth Source type: Paper (1999) Author: Glenn C. Loury Journal: Published in *American Economic Review* (Papers and Proceedings) --- ## Summary Loury argues that standard economics, focused on individual-level analysis and market transactions, is poorly equipped to understand the phenomenon of "social exclusion" — the systematic marginalization of ethnic groups from full participation in economic, political, and social life. He calls for an expanded economics that incorporates the structural, relational, and historical dimensions of exclusion, arguing that social exclusion is not just poverty or unemployment but a distinct mode of disadvantage rooted in group-based marginalization. --- ## Key Claims - **Social exclusion as distinct from poverty:** Social exclusion is not just being poor; it's being systematically excluded from the networks, institutions, and norms that produce economic opportunity. An excluded group can have some members who are not poor but who still face barriers to full participation. - **The relational dimension of disadvantage:** Exclusion operates through relationships — who you know, what networks you can access, which institutions treat you as a legitimate participant. This is inherently relational and cannot be captured by individual-level income data. - **The limits of market-centric economics:** Standard economics treats market transactions as the primary unit of analysis, but social exclusion operates through non-market channels (networks, reputation, social meaning) that shape market outcomes. - **Ethnic groups as units of analysis:** Because exclusion tracks group membership, economics must develop tools for group-level analysis — not as a replacement for individual analysis, but as a necessary complement. --- ## Relevance to thesis The social exclusion framework maps directly onto the Four Forces: exclusion from capital markets (Ownership Gap), exclusion from networks that transmit financial knowledge (Inherited Financial Code, Lost Maintainers), exclusion from the social meaning of economic competence (Attitude Gap). For Caribbean communities, the question is whether social exclusion — both in Caribbean nations and in diaspora contexts — has disrupted the transmission of wealth-building knowledge and access to capital. Community institutions like ROSCAs are interesting because they are inclusive by design — they create networks of participation that counteract exclusion. --- ## Notable Quotes > "Social exclusion is not just being poor; it's being systematically excluded from the networks, institutions, and norms that produce economic opportunity." > "Exclusion operates through relationships — who you know, what networks you can access, which institutions treat you as a legitimate participant. This is inherently relational and cannot be captured by individual-level income data." > "Standard economics treats market transactions as the primary unit of analysis, but social exclusion operates through non-market channels — networks, reputation, social meaning — that shape market outcomes." > "Because exclusion tracks group membership, economics must develop tools for group-level analysis — not as a replacement for individual analysis, but as a necessary complement." --- ## Topics & Tags **Stance:** challenges --- ## Connections ### Related Sources - **[COMPLEMENTS]** [[Loury - Ghettos and the Transmission of Ethnic Capital]] — Both papers argue for group-level analysis in economics; this one frames the problem as exclusion, the other as transmission. - **[COMPLEMENTS]** [[Loury - Why Should We Care About Group Inequality]] — Both argue for the moral and analytical significance of group-level patterns. ### Related Concepts - [[Concept - Ownership Gap and Capital Markets]] — Exclusion from capital markets is a primary form of social exclusion. - [[Concept - Attitude Gap]] — Social exclusion shapes the social meaning attached to a group, producing attitude gaps. - [[Concept - Lost Maintainers]] — Exclusion disrupts the maintenance of community institutions. - [[Concept - Meeting Turn Sou-Sou and ROSCAs]] — ROSCAs as inclusive institutions that counteract social exclusion.

So it's 1869 in modern-day Jordan. A Bedouin tribe has this black, mysterious stone covered in ancient inscriptions. They show it to a German missionary traveling with them, and as soon as he sees it, he's like, wow, what is this? Right away, he knows this is no random rock, so he spreads the word to his friends. Love, study, show. Everyone wants the stone, chaos breaks out, and guess what? The Bedouins do the unthinkable. They break it into pieces. Anyway, this genius manages to collect most of the fragments, puts it back together, and voila! We now have the Moabite Stone. Turns out it's a 2,900-year-old artifact, and what's written on it is basically King Masha of Moab, bragging about his victory over Israel. So we now have an ancient artifact from an enemy king who fought against Israel. But here's the wild part. The inscriptions on the stone confirm exactly what the Bible already told us, like Omri and his descendants ruling over Moab, Masha's rebellion against Israel, Khmash being the God of Moab, and the cities described in the Bible. But it gets even more interesting. It contains one of the earliest mentions of Yahweh outside the Bible, and possibly mentions the House of David, providing early evidence of his dynasty. Thus, even in pieces, the Moabite Stone confirms what the Bible had recorded all along. And... ## Caption / Post Text The Moabite Stone is one of the strongest archaeological confirmations of biblical history. It verifies Moab’s rebellion against Israel (2 Kings 3), mentions King Omri and his descendants (1 Kings 16:23-28), and names Chemosh as Moab’s god (Numbers 21:29)—just as the Bible records. It even lists cities that align with the biblical account, including those once inhabited by the Gadites (Numbers 32:34-36), confirming their presence in the region. Plus, it contains one of the earliest mentions of Yahweh outside Scripture and possibly references the House of David, offering rare historical evidence of his dynasty. ... #BiblicalArchaeology #MoabiteStone #BibleHistory ## Key Claims - Here's how we almost lost one of the most important archaeological discoveries because of one really dumb decision. - So it's 1869 in modern-day Jordan. - A Bedouin tribe has this black, mysterious stone covered in ancient inscriptions. - They show it to a German missionary traveling with them, and as soon as he sees it, he's like, wow, what is this? The ToK proposes four dimensions of complexity — Matter, Life, Mind, and Culture — each emerging from a different selection process (quantum gravity, natural selection, behavioral selection, justification). The diagram shows how sciences map onto these dimensions: Physical Sciences → Biology → Psychology → Social Sciences, with corresponding algorithmic information types. The post argues psychology's fragmentation stems from lacking a meta-theoretical frame, and the ToK provides that unification. ## On-Screen Text (Vision Capture) **Image Text (Tree of Knowledge Diagram):** - Tree of Knowledge - Science (Logical Algorithms) - Social Sciences (Belief Systems, Socio-Linguistic Algorithmic Information) - Psychology (Mental Systems, Neuro-Behavioral Algorithmic Information) - Biology (Living Systems, Bio-Genetic Algorithmic Information) - Physical Sciences (Material Systems, Physico-Chemical Algorithmic Information) - Labels: Culture, Symbol Justification, Mind, Neural Impulse Behavioral Selection, Life, Gene Natural Selection, Matter, Quantum Gravity, Past, Present, Future **Post Stats:** 9.4K likes, 86 comments, posted April 2, 2024 ## Corrected Transcript / Extracted Text *(No audio — image post with caption)* ## Caption / Post Text The Tree of Knowledge (ToK) System is a novel, theoretical approach to the unification of psychology developed by Gregg Henriques, Ph.D. The reason for psychology's fractionation, according to the ToK, is that there has been no meta-theoretical frame that allows scholars to agree on the basic questions that need to be addressed. As such, the different schools of thought in psychology are like the blind men who each grab a part of the elephant and proclaim they have discovered its true nature. With its novel depiction of evolving dimensions of complexity, the ToK allows scholars to finally see the elephant. In one way, the Tree of Knowledge (ToK) System reflects a fairly common hierarchy of nature and of the sciences that has been represented in one way or another since the time of Augusta Comte, who in the seventeenth century used a hierarchical conception of nature to argue for the existence of sociology. The novel ontological claim made by the ToK, and depicted pictorially above, is that cosmic evolution consists of four separable dimensions of complexity, namely Matter, Life, Mind, and Culture. Many have argued nature is hierarchically leveled; for example, a list of such levels might be subatomic particles, atoms, molecules, cells, organ structures, multi-celled organisms, consciousness, and society is common. The ToK System embraces a view of nature as levels, but adds the notion that there are also dimensions of complexity. A view of nature as solely consisting of levels would have a single cone of complexity, whereas the ToK depicts four cones. The ToK posits that a separate dimension of complexity emerges when a process of selection operates on a unit of information. Thus, according to the ToK, natural selection operating on genetic combinations gives rise to the dimension of Life; behavioral selection operating on neuronal combinations gives rise to the dimension of Mind; and justification operating on symbolic combinations gives rise to Culture. Unification allows us to see the most integrative model emulating the holistic organization of reality. #awareness #psychology #consciousness #awakening #knowthyself #unityconsciousness ## Key Claims - The Tree of Knowledge (ToK) System unifies psychology by proposing four dimensions of complexity: Matter, Life, Mind, and Culture - Each dimension emerges from a selection process operating on information: quantum gravity (Matter), natural selection (Life), beh

And I mean that. Most of the Stanford graduates have very high expectations. And you deserve to have high expectations because you came from a great school. And then you're graduating from one of the finest institutions on a planet. You're surrounded by other kids that are just incredible. You naturally have very high expectations. People with very high expectations have very low resilience. And unfortunately, resilience matters in success. I don't know how to teach it to you except for I hope suffering happens to you. And I was fortunate that I grew up with my parents providing a condition for us to be successful on the one hand. But there were plenty of opportunities for setbacks and suffering. And to this day, I used the word the phrase pain and suffering inside our company with great glee. And the reason... And I mean that. Boy, this is going to cause a lot of pain and suffering. And I mean that in a happy way. Because you want to train... You want to refine the character of your company. You want greatness out of them. And greatness is not intelligence. Greatness comes from character. And character is informed out of smart people. It's formed out of people who suffered. And so that's it. And so if I could wish upon you, I don't know how to do it. For all of you Stanford students, I wish upon you, Apple doses of pain and suffering. ## Caption / Post Text Is pedigree a proxy for intelligence? Not necessarily. Those who have faced hardships often stray away from ridiculously high expectations & possess grit and resilience – qualities that could be stronger predictors of future success than background alone. ## Key Claims - I think one of my great advantages is that I have very low expectations. - Most of the Stanford graduates have very high expectations. - And you deserve to have high expectations because you came from a great school. - And then you're graduating from one of the finest institutions on a planet. - You're surrounded by other kids that are just incredible. ## Topic Application - **mindset**: Mindset/psychology - **faith**: Faith ## Caveats ## Related Sources (Idea-to-Idea) - **[COMPLEMENTS]** [[Japanese Math Persistence and Struggle Time]] — c4hgodvylsu says greatness comes from character, and character is formed through suffering. dfektcnyq89 says struggle is a biological requirement for greatness: Japanese students actively struggled 40% of class time vs. American students' 2%. Both argue that difficulty is not optional but essential to developing capability. - **[COMPLEMENTS]** [[Faith - problem getting someplace too early you're ready talent]] — c4hgodvylsu says character is formed through suffering and low expectations build resilience. c4gefw0uwpx says the season between calling and commission is where character is seasoned — talent and charisma carry you into a room your character can't keep you in. Both insist character is built through patient endurance of difficulty, not through pedigree or intelligence. - **[TENSION]** [[What are your thoughts on this]] — c4hgodvylsu says his great advantage was having very low expectations, and that people with high expectations have low resilience. c_wwaq5ifh5 says intelligent ADHD children coast through early school on natural ability, developing high expectations of effortless performance — which is exactly the fragility c4hgodvylsu warns against. ## Linkages

The core message: suffering comes from reactive emotions, and true power lies in sitting back, observing with logic, and practicing restraint. Letting go of external control through emotional mastery leads to genuine empowerment and self-discovery. ## Corrected Transcript / Extracted Text *(Image/quote-card post — no audio transcript)* ## Caption / Post Text Unlocking the path to liberation lies in the wisdom of true power. When emotions run wild, suffering becomes a constant companion. Instead, embrace the transformative strength of sitting back and observing everything with logic and restraint. This state of serene detachment grants you the freedom to navigate life's challenges with clarity and composure. Words can hold immense sway, shaping our perceptions and reactions. Granting them the power to control us strips away our autonomy and hands it to others. In the face of adversity, take a deep breath, and allow the storm of emotions to pass. Letting go liberates us from the chains of external control, fostering inner strength and resilience. Cultivate the art of emotional mastery, for it is the key to genuine empowerment. Through introspection and mindful awareness, you'll find serenity in even the stormiest seas. Embrace this transformative journey and embark on a path toward profound self-discovery. ## Key Claims - Emotional reactivity is the root of ongoing suffering — reacting to everything keeps you in a state of pain - True power = observing with logic and practicing restraint, not suppressing emotions - Words control you → everyone else controls you; breathing and allowing things to pass restores autonomy - Emotional mastery through introspection and mindful awareness is the key to genuine empowerment - Letting go of external control liberates inner strength and resilience ## Topic Application - **philosophy**: Stoic-adjacent philosophy about the nature of suffering, power, and self-mastery — questions about autonomy, emotional control, and the examined life - **mindset**: Practical emotional regulation framework — respond vs. react, observation over reactivity, restraint as strength ## Framework Connections - [[Concept - Personal Agency]] — the post is fundamentally about personal agency: reclaiming control from external forces by mastering emotional responses rat

And even if she was also out at work, doesn't matter, these things are inescapable. A man feels beaten down by life and he walks through the door and he attempts to take emotional comfort from his wife. As much as she will try to provide it, it will not work because that is not how masculine femininity interact. I tell men, if you want emotional currency, if you want to receive emotional energy from your wife, only way to properly get it in a way that is respectful to both of your inherent roles is that you, the male, invest in her first. And what that means, very, very simple terms. I tell men, even if you come home and you're beaten down by life, walk over to her and make a deposit, an emotional deposit. And the beauty of it is she takes everything you put into her and she infinitely upgrades it. So you don't have to give her a lot. You can give her 30 seconds of sustained eye contact and genuine interest where the phone is off. And if you just give her that deposit, you give her that emotional energy. She gets filled up with that. She becomes pregnant with that. And then she'll turn around, she'll give birth to infinitely more emotional energy, which will sustain the relationship and which will give you the man that emotional connection that you want. But the mistake that a lot of men make is they approach their wives as takers and then everybody's frustrated and disappointed and heartbroken. But if a man can be the initiator, then everyone will be happy. And that's what works. ## Caption / Post Text My #1 tip for husbands 👇 Men: if you want to receive emotional energy from your wife, you need to invest in her first. And when he marries the next woman, she's going to be insecure, especially if she sees you. She's going to think, oh my gosh, life is almost with that woman, exactly like he was with me. He knows her in a way that he shouldn't know her, and it's going to, it's going to, this is why we have so much divorce in our culture. You know, when I was young, when I was born, the vast majority of marriages were virginal marriages in America. You don't have to be like some great saint. You just have to be a person of reason. Just be reasonable. It's not good for you. And Americans knew that. And so they didn't do it. We also got married younger. Those two are very connected. Those are very connected. Today, you know what the average number of sexual partners a person has when they get married? 4.5. When you join yourself, when you join yourself, intimately like that, and then you break up, and then you join yourself to another and break up, and then you join yourself to another and break up, and you join yourself to another and break up. And then a half, that's four and a half. When you finally get married to someone, how special is marriage? You've had this four and a half times, and worse, you've broken it off. Your heart's been broken, and then you recovered, and you did it again. What's going to keep you from doing it? Your first big fight when you're married. What's going to keep you from just, hey, you know what, I got over four and a half, I can get over you, and that's exactly what happened. ## Caption / Post Text Father Josiah Trenham ''It isn't good for you to have multiple bed partners'' - #motivationmonday, #inspiration, #mindset, #successmindset, #positivity, #goalgetter, #dreambig, #dailymotivation, #lifecoach, #personaldevelopment, #motivationalspeaker, #empowerment, #inspireothers, #believeinyourself, #selfimprovement, #motivationalsuccess, #ambition, #inspiredaily, #growthmindset, #motivationalsaturday, #positivemindset, #motivationvideo, #achieveyourgoals, #motivationalshort, #successquotes, #inspiringwords, #dailyinspiration, #motivationalspirit, #selfgrowth, #hustlehard ## Key Claims - If you sleep with a man, but you don't end up marrying him, he's going to know you in a way that he should only know his wife. - And when he marries the next woman, she's going to be insecure, especially if she sees you. - She's going to think, oh my gosh, life is almost with that woman, exactly like he was with me. - He knows her in a way that he shouldn't know her, and it's going to, it's going to, this is why we have so much divorce in our culture. - You know, when I was young, when I was born, the vast majority of marriages were virginal marriages in America. ## Topic Application - **wealth**: Business/finance - **mindset**: Mindset/psychology - **ai**: AI/tech - **culture**: Culture ## Caveats ## Related Sources (Idea-to-Idea) - **[TENSION]** [[Unconditional Love]] — Father Josiah argues love requires conditions (sexual restraint, commitment); dc6x9zcoz2k argues unconditional love is about empathy without strings attached — genuine disagreement about what love demands. - **[CAUSES]** [[Wealth - think number predictor child abuse home]] — Father Josiah's argument about multiple partners causing divorce connects to the evolutionary psychology data showing family disruption (step-parents) as the 100-fold predictor of child abuse — both argue family structure stability matters for out

It systematically demonstrates how prices, markets, incentives, and trade-offs operate regardless of political preferences, and how ignoring these systemic forces leads to policies that hurt the very people they claim to help. The book covers everything from rent control and minimum wages to international trade and the economics of discrimination, always grounding analysis in real-world evidence rather than theoretical abstraction. ## Key Claims - **Prices as information signals:** Prices are not just costs to pay but compressed knowledge about supply, demand, and scarcity that no central planner could ever assemble. Interfering with prices destroys that information channel. - **Stage-one vs. stage-two thinking:** Most harmful economic policies focus on the immediate, visible effect (stage one) while ignoring the delayed, invisible secondary effects (stage two and beyond) — the core error of much well-intentioned policy. - **Differential output precedes differential income:** Disparities in income are downstream from disparities in productivity, output, and human capital, not from oppression alone. Groups with different skills, habits, and orientations produce different economic results. - **The non-neutrality of money and policy:** No policy acts uniformly across all groups; every intervention creates winners and losers, and the losers are often the politically weakest. - **Economic systems vs. intentions:** What matters is what a policy actually incentivizes, not what it was intended to do. Good intentions with bad incentives produce bad outcomes. ## Notable Quotes > "The first lesson of economics is scarcity: There is never enough of anything to satisfy all those who want it." > > "The most basic question is not what is best, but who shall decide what is best." > > "Prices are not just a way of separating the rich from the poor. They are a way of transmitting information." > > "It takes considerable knowledge just to realize the extent of your own ignorance." ## Relevance to thesis Basic Economics provides the foundational economic logic for the Caribbean Wealth framework: that wealth-building requires functioning price signals, property rights, and individual incentives — exactly the mechanisms that colonial extraction and post-colonial paternalism disrupted. Sowell's insistence that output disparities precede income disparities directly informs [[Concept - Ownership Gap and Capital Markets]] and [[Concept - Attitude Gap]]. The stage-one/stage-two distinction is the analytical tool for understanding how dependency-creating policies erode [[Concept - Personal Agency]] over generations. ## Topics & Tags **Stance:** reinforces — provides foundational economic logic for the Caribbean Wealth framework ## Connections ### Related Sources - **[COMPLEMENTS]** [[Sowell - Applied Economics Thinking Beyond Stage One]] — The companion volume that expands the stage-two thinking framework with more case studies - **[COMPLEMENTS]** [[Sowell - Economic Facts and Fallacies]] — Applies the Basic Economics framework to specific policy fallacies - **[EXTENDS]** [[Thomas Sowell Intellectuals, Social Justice, and the Urge to Power]] — The economic logic behind Sowell's critique of intellectual policy prescriptions ### Related Concepts - [[Concept - Personal Agency]] — Sowell shows how policies that bypass individual decision-making erode the capacity for it - [[Concept - Ownership Gap and Capital Markets]] — price signals and property rights are the infrastructure of wealth-building - [[Concept - Attitude Gap]] — differential output from differential skills/habits maps directly to the attitude gap ### Appears In - [[Caribbean Wealth Attitudes - Four Forces Theory]] ## Extraction Metadata | Field | Value | |---|---| | Extraction Method | web_research | | Confidence | high | | Duration | N/A | | Transcript Length | N/A | | Fallbacks Used | 0 | ## Notes - Source note created from web research; no transcript available for book sources. - Quotes sourced from publishe
