No. It was a study done by researchers to figure out exactly what Kobe Bryant did when he was struggling in his career to turn it around. It was 2003. Kobe's career was falling apart. His dynasty was falling apart. Brands were pulling out. Everything was crashing. He went to his performance coach and he said to him, I feel like I'm losing my edge. And his performance coach said, you're not losing your edge, you're losing your identity. So they sat down and came up with a new identity form and they called him the Black Mamba. And the first game after that name change, he scored 62 points. And then a month later, the 81 point game. He went on to win two more championships and he turned everything around. Now this is something each and every one of us can do. It's called the alter ego effect. I did it in my life when I wanted to become a Nike athlete. I was 300 pounds, but the brain tumor. I gave myself an athlete name, Charlie Rocker. I ended up doing an Iron Man becoming a Nike athlete and commercials with the Braun James and Serena Williams. There are so many other people who have done this as well. Cash's Clay wanted to become somebody new. He named himself Muhammad Ali. Ralph Lipschitz wanted to become a famous fashion designer, so he gave himself a name. Ralph Lauren. There's so much that you've been through. Just like there was so much Kobe was going through. To enter into this next chapter, give yourself a new name. Own a new identity and watch how your performance changes. ## Caption / Post Text This is the most interesting psychological phenomenon I’ve ever discovered! Loury **Processed:** 2026-06-19T00:00:00+00:00 **Priority Bucket:** caribbean-values-wealth Source type: Paper (2004) Author: Glenn C. Loury Journal: Published in *The Anatomy of Racial Inequality* and as essay --- ## Summary Loury examines whether affirmative action — the primary policy tool for addressing racial inequality in employment and education — can actually eliminate the negative stereotypes that underlie persistent group inequality. He argues that while affirmative action can change the equilibrium by increasing the representation of disadvantaged group members in high-status positions (which can update stereotypes), it can also reinforce stereotypes if it is perceived as lowering standards. The effect depends critically on whether the policy changes the underlying skill distribution or merely changes the hiring threshold. --- ## Key Claims - **Affirmative action's dual effect on stereotypes:** By increasing the visibility of qualified minority candidates, affirmative action can update beliefs and weaken negative stereotypes. But if it is perceived as lowering standards, it can reinforce the stereotype of incompetence. - **The equilibrium question:** Whether affirmative action breaks or reinforces stereotypes depends on which equilibrium it pushes the system toward — a "merit-confirming" equilibrium where increased representation reflects genuine skill, or a "quota-confirming" equilibrium where it reflects lowered standards. - **The importance of skill investment:** Affirmative action works best when it changes the incentive to invest in skills — when it credibly signals that investment will be rewarded. If it only changes hiring without changing investment, it produces a mismatch that reinforces stereotypes. - **The timing problem:** Stereotypes update slowly. Even when affirmative action successfully increases the skill levels of a group, the stereotype lags behind reality, creating a period where qualified group members still face stereotype-based discounting. --- ## Relevance to thesis This analysis is directly relevant to the **Attitude Gap** in the Caribbean wealth context. If Caribbean communities are stereotyped as financially unreliable, will interventions that increase their access to capital markets (e.g., community development financial institutions) update the stereotype or reinforce it? The answer depends on whether the interventions change the underlying financial behavior (through community institutions like ROSCAs that build genuine capacity) or merely change the access threshold without changing behavior. The Four Forces framework's emphasis on building real capacity (not just changing access) is consistent with Loury's analysis. --- ## Notable Quotes > "Affirmative action can update beliefs and weaken negative stereotypes by increasing the visibility of qualified minority candidates — but if perceived as lowering standards, it can reinforce the stereotype of incompetence." > "Whether affirmative action breaks or reinforces stereotypes depends on which equilibrium it pushes the system toward — a 'merit-confirming' equilibrium or a 'quota-confirming' equilibrium." > "Affirmative action works best when it changes the incentive to invest in skills. Chanting anti-Syneism, it's anti-Semitic. Chanting free Palestine is anti-Semitic. When you are still calling for a ceasefire, do you just hate Jews? With the help of two Jewish experts, I wanted to find out how Israel and its allies are weaponizing anti-Semitism, why it's dangerous and who it's hurting. You can, along with the straight face, say that Israel really wants peace. They support a two-state solution. They don't wanna oppress the Palestinians. That's where we saw the birth of this new definition of anti-Semitism. Okay, so that new definition Laura is talking about is that the crux of this conversation because it's how the pro-Israel establishment deliberately ties criticism of Israel and anti-Syneism to charges of anti-Semitism. It's called the IRA definition on anti-Semitism, named for the organization that drafted it. The IRA definition was published in 2016 and includes 11 contemporary examples of anti-Semitism, six of which relate to Israel. The argument was made that all or most criticism of Israel is anti-Semitism. We're gonna put this in a definition. We're now gonna take this definition and put it into law around the world. And we're gonna use this as a blunt instrument to shut down once and for all these arguments and that's where we are today. Dozens of countries and many NGOs, universities, and corporations around the world have adopted the IRA definition. Even the US House of Representatives passed a resolution in late 2023 that equates anti-Syneism with anti-Semitism as defined by IRA. So why is this a problem? Before we get into it, let's define some key terms. Anti-Semitism is prejudice, hate, threats, or violence against Jews because they are Jewish. It's real and it exists. Anti-Syneism on the other hand is the movement against Zionism. Zionism is the nationalist ideology behind the creation and maintenance of Israel, a Jewish ethno-state in Palestine. That ethno-state was created in 1948 by forcing out the territories indigenous Palestinian majority. So how is the IRA definition being weaponized today? For one, it shields Israel from criticism. The state of Israel uses the history and the legacy of anti-Semitism to deflect any criticism of its government's policies. So this is a very intentional strategy. For decades, there's been a concerted effort to collapse the distinction between the Jewish religion and Zionism and that ramped up in the 2000s. When Israeli leaders made it pretty clear that they were no longer interested in seeking a political solution with Palestinians. Since October 7th, Israel has killed more than 31,000 Palestinians in Gaza, including more than 13,000 children. But many Israeli leaders have reacted like this, when confronted with international condemnation. The hog hearing, it's a show of shame, hypocrisy, and blatant anti-Semitism. The idea that the Israeli government is weaponizing the memory of the Holocaust to evade any consequences for the atrocities in Gaza, it's such a tragedy of history. Two, the adoption of the IRA definition has curtail-free speech and fostered anti-Palestinian racism around the world. It's being used to attack Palestinian voices or pro-Palestine voices, pretty much across every part of society. A 2023 report found dozens of cases where IRA was explicitly used to target those advocating for Palestinian rights throughout Europe. And colleges in the US are told to use the IRA definition when combating anti-Semitism on campuses, which has cycled free speech. We see lawsuit after lawsuit and complaint after complaint targeting activists on campus targeting administrators, targeting professors. We literally have cases based on somebody had a sign that said, River to the Sea. So you're claiming it's a ha

It usually means their work is shit. Sometimes it means I think your work is shit and I'm wrong. But usually it means their work is not anywhere you're good enough. When you get really good people, they know they're really good and you don't have to baby people's ego so much. And what really matters is the work and everybody knows that that's all that matters is the work. And the most important thing I think you can do for somebody who's really good and who's really being counted on is to point out to them when their work isn't good enough. And to do it very clearly and to articulate why and to get them back on track. And you need to do that in a way that does not call into question your confidence in their abilities but leaves not too much room for interpretation that it's the work that they've done for this particular thing is not good enough to support the goal of the team. And that's a hard thing to do. And I've always taken a very direct approach. And I think if you talk to people that have worked with me, the really good people have found it beneficial. ## Caption / Post Text Steve Jobs talking about how to tell people who are best when their work is not good enough. I can tell you that we have been doing this from the very beginning and it's the only reason that Amazon.com exists today in any form. We've always put customers first. When given the choice of obsessing over competitors or obsessing over customers, we always obsess over customers. We pay attention to what our competitors do, but it's not where we put our energy. It's not where we get our motivation from. We really like to start with customers and work backwards. And again, that is the key thing that I know and it covers a lot of other mistakes. If you're truly obsessed over customers, it'll cover a lot of errors. ## Caption / Post Text Customer obsession has been the cornerstone of Amazon’s success since day one. Many of the best companies we ever funded at YC were people that came to us saying we're going to do something for our country or our city or whatever. The post argues that hardships and challenging tasks should be viewed as opportunities for personal growth, drawing on Stoic philosophy. The speaker referenced is @hubermanlab (Andrew Huberman). The post asks viewers how they will challenge themselves in the new year, framing Stoic philosophy as practical guidance for self-improvement. ## On-Screen Text (Vision Capture) **Post header:** theaestheticstoic **Page status:** Region-restricted — "This content isn't available in your country due to legal restrictions." *(Content not viewable due to regional restrictions. Caption text from original metadata preserved below.)* ## Corrected Transcript / Extracted Text *(No audio — reel video; content region-restricted)* ## Caption / Post Text How will you challenge yourself this new year? Seneca wrote extensively on the theme of facing adversity and doing what is necessary with resilience. He argued that hardships and challenging tasks can be viewed as opportunities for personal growth. Speaker: @hubermanlab • • • Follow us @theaestheticstoic for more content like this. #mindset #stoicism #discipline #motivation #stoic #discipline #selfimprovement #success #philosophy ## Key Claims - **Seneca on adversity as opportunity:** The Stoic view that hardships are not obstacles but training grounds for character — adversity as the path to personal growth. - **Resilience as active practice:** Stoicism frames resilience not as passive endurance but as active engagement with difficulty — "doing what is necessary." - **Cross-pollination of Stoicism and neuroscience:** The post references @hubermanlab (Andrew Huberman), bridging ancient philosophy with modern neuroscience of motivation and challenge. - **New year as philosophical checkpoint:** Using the calendar transition as a prompt for philosophical self-examination — a practical application of Stoic reflection. ## Topic Application - **philosophy**: Directly about Stoic philosophy — Seneca's writings on adversity, resilience, and personal growth. Core Stoic theme of reframing obstacles as opportunities. - **mindset**: The post is a mindset intervention — shifting from viewing hardship as punishment to viewing it as training. A growth-mindset application of ancient philosophy. ## Framework Connections - [[Concept - Personal Agency]] — Stoic philosophy is fundamentally about agency: choosing your response to circumstances you cannot control. Seneca's adversity-as-opportunity framing is an agency exercise. - [[Concept - Attitude Gap]] — The gap between facing hardship with resentment vs. facing it as growth opportunity is an attitude gap — the same event, different orientation. - [[AI Convos - Philosophy, Meaning, and Self-Inquiry]] — Stoic self-examination connects to philosophical self-inquiry traditions — questioning how we frame and respond to experience. ## Content Opportunities - Stoicism content resonates broadly — could adapt for Caribbean/hospitality context (resilience in business, facing challenges in entrepreneurship). - The Seneca + Huberman bridge is interesting — ancient wisdom validated by modern neuroscience. ## Caveats - Post is region-restricted; vision capture could not verify on-screen content or any text overlay on the video. - Caption text from original metadata preserved as-is. - The reference to @hubermanlab as speaker suggests this may be a Huberman audio clip with Stoic commentary, but this cannot be confirmed without viewing the video. ## Related Sources (Idea-to-Idea) - [[The Boy Protects Who He Is Now The Man Risks Who He Is Becoming]] — **[COMPLEMENTS]**: Seneca's adversity-as-opportunity parallels the boy-to-man threshold — embracing cost as the path to growth. - [[Stop comparing yourself to Andrej Karpathy]] — **[COMPLEMENTS]**: Karpathy's "learning is effort, not fun" echoes Stoic discipline — both frame difficulty as the method of growth. ## Linkages

It's not like boyfriend, because I never really had a real boyfriend. Never, all my members should see me with a picture, or a killer or something like that. So it's kind of hard for me to say, I have a boyfriend, because I never really had the chance to have a real boyfriend. So the fact that all my girlfriends just thought they'd come over and they're like, oh my man, it's just that they didn't talk about their man problems like damn, how much they have problems. I'm like, oh my god, my life, what the fuck? Pretty you are. Another damn paradise. How are things, peaches? I ran through since last time with seeds. You had a health problem? Yes, it's done now, it's cleared up. It's cleared up. That'll happen in the line of work you're in. Yeah, I know every day. Did you ever find out what it was? Climbing and got, yeah, I had both. Yeah, both. Yeah, I... You took antibiotics and got rid of it. Oh yeah, antibiotics and basically for the next, and I got a shot too, I got the shot. Oh really? And you're still taking the antibiotics? No, I think today, not today, but this week is my last week of taking them. Yeah, you gotta take the photos. Yeah, you can't miss it, eh? You can't, you can't, another it's cleared up, you can't stop. Yeah. Nope, and then I'm housing, I haven't heard back from there yet, but they did call me back and tell me to switch over my stuff from Sacramento to LA. That's great. And I did that, so I'm just waiting on a call back from there. Yeah, it's amazing how they're getting housing for people. Yeah, I can't wait. I seem to be on the bottom of this, but it makes sense because you know, I just started reaching out for housing. Yeah, you seem to be good candidate. You're not gonna cause problems if you're somebody's roommate. You're not roommate, but like next door neighbor. Uh-huh. You're not the kind of person that's gonna cause problems if they're loud music or they're bringing dudes in middle of the night. You're tired. I am tired, but I didn't mean my way down here because I was like, damn, I'm just gonna be the second day and I was just three there, but I was not, but I've been like lately, it's like, because I had a boyfriend out. It's not like a boyfriend because I never really had a real boyfriend. Never, all my members should see me be a bitch or dealers or something like that. So it's kind of hard for me to say I have a boyfriend because you know, I never really had the chance to have a real boyfriend. So the fact that all my girlfriends just thought they'd come over and they're like, oh my man is just in there and they'd tell about their man problems, like damn, how am I gonna stay in problems? I'm like, oh my God, my life, which... But I know I'm not in love because I know I'm in love and I'm in peace because I'm in love because I don't have them, because I know that's a lot of them. But then I feel like I'm in love because they're with me wholeheartedly about me. But then you know, like, watching a show when love breaks down, and we're not in love at all. So I feel like I'm in love with every girl and I'm in love with every girl I'm in love with every girl. I'm in love with every girl I'm in love with her. It's like I'm in love with my girlfriend, No, he's not even that sugar daddy. That's the thing you got me. I'm your sugar daddy. I know I know I know I know But he's not a sugar daddy. I've been giving you I've been helping you with housing for a bit. Yeah, ever since I came to LA Hopefully you get Housing get that taken care of so I don't have to do this anymore. No shut up. So so who's it? Who's this guy? He met you on the on the Santa Monica Boulevard. No, he met me on Through a relationship with my last best friend It's her man But no, no, it's nothing like that. It's
